Writing an obituary can be a daunting task, which is why man people let the funeral director or newspaper staff write one. A meaningful obituary can be achieved by celebrating their life. Not only can a well-crafted obituary be a way to honor your loved one, but it can serve as a cathartic moment for yourself and possibly help with your own grief and emotion.

It is common for friends and family to send sympathy flowers to the immediate family of someone who has passed away, especially to the spouse or partner. However, often times the phrase "in lieu of flowers, please ...." will appear either in the obituary or funeral invitations. For some, this may cause confusion during a delicate time.

The purpose of an obituary is to inform others of someone’s death. Summarizing and condensing a loved one’s life into a few hundred words can be difficult, especially with the weight of honoring their legacy. It might help, therefore, to think of it more as a celebration of their life, a way of illuminating their accomplishments to share with those affected by their passing.
