The person responsible for winding down the administrative affairs of a loved one after they pass, will need to have several copies of the death certificate on hand in order to provide to various institutions and agencies.

Generally, you will need one certified copy of the death certificate for each major asset for which you will need to transfer ownership (such as cars, real estate, or bank accounts), as well as for items such as life insurance policies, veteran’s survivor benefits, and annuities.

Below are links to the vital records department website for every state, as well as Washington, D.C., where you will be able to request copies of the death certificate.

You can also order copies from private suppliers which can be found online (the turnaround time will likely be faster through a third party, which will be reflected in the fee).
