After the loss of a loved one, there are many administrative tasks that need to be completed to wind down their affairs. One of the most important steps is to cancel their driver’s license, as it could help prevent fraud and identity theft.
It often requires mailing a copy of the death certificate with a copy of the driver’s license to the Department of Motor Vehicles, but as specific instructions vary from state to state, please contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state your loved one lived to find out the necessary steps to successfully cancel their driver’s license.
Once it is confirmed that the license has been canceled, you should also destroy all physical copies of the license.
For your convenience, we have included links for each Department of Motor Vehicles website listed alphabetically by state. For more information on winding down your loved one’s estate, please view our complete Funeral Planning Checklist.
